Editing a Floor Plan

Overview

Every apartment and mixed-use building gets a floor plan with walls, doors and windows. You can edit any unit's inside, bring in a plan you already have, and download a floor as a drawing. Start from a building's Units in Build, or see Units in Drawn Buildings for how the plans are made.

Editing a Unit's Plan

Pick a unit, then Edit the plan. The change applies to that unit on every residential floor; on the ground floor its balcony opens to the garden in front.

  • Select: drag an inside wall (the walls that end on it follow), a door, a window or a bathroom fixture. Click a room to name it or say what it is: the standards go by what a room is.
  • Wall: click where it starts and ends. It runs square to the unit and stops on a wall it comes close to. A room it splits off is called Room 1 until you name it.
  • Door: click a wall between two rooms, or the wall to the balcony. Set its width and whether it's hinged, sliding or an open doorway.
  • Window: click an outside wall. Not a wall to the corridor or the next unit.

The outer walls stay: the building sets them. Undo and Redo (Ctrl or Cmd + Z), and Delete, work as you'd expect. This unit against Clause 57 (or 58) updates as you go, and says what's wrong. Ventilation and accessibility apply to a share of a building's homes, so one unit missing them doesn't fail the building: the Check counts the share.

Use this plan keeps it; Back to the generated layout drops it. If you later change the building so the unit's size moves by more than 10 cm, the plan no longer fits: the generated layout is used there and the Units panel says so. Changing the unit's type drops its plan too.

Wall thicknesses are drawing stand-ins (200 mm outside and between homes, 90 mm inside). Rooms are measured to the wall lines.

Bringing In a Plan

You can bring in an openPlan3D project (.openplan.json) or an Apple RoomPlan scan (JSON, or a ZIP with one room.json), up to 10 MB. It's read in your browser.

  • To a unit: pick the unit, then Bring in a plan. The file's first floor is turned by quarter turns until it fits, with its windows on the façade where that's possible, and set in the unit's corner. If it doesn't fit, you're told both sizes. If it leaves part of the unit empty, you're told how much, and can edit it.
  • To a whole building: Bring in a plan for the whole building. Floors stack in order and lie along the footprint. Rooms joined by doors make a home, leaving out rooms named as corridors, lobbies, stairs, lifts, shops or offices. If it doesn't fit the footprint, you're told both sizes. Back to the generated layout drops it.

Rooms are found from the file's walls, so a room that isn't closed by walls isn't read. Names come from the file; a room without one is Room 1, Room 2 and so on, counted as "other" until you name it. A scan's walls are as captured: a scan is less exact than a drawing. Bathroom fixtures aren't in these files, so the bathroom part of accessibility stays to be confirmed.

Furniture

Plans show a bed and wardrobe, kitchen bench and fridge, sofa, dining table and washer, placed from what each room is and its size: on a blank wall where there is one, clear of doors, with no wardrobe or fridge in front of a window. Furniture turns it off in the floor plans. If a bed or kitchen won't fit, the floor plans and the unit editor say so, which a room's area doesn't tell you. It's placed automatically, so you can't move a piece yet. Sizes are common ones (a queen bed is 1.53 × 2.03 m), not a standard.

Plans Out

  • PDF: A3 at a true scale (1:50, 1:100, 1:200 …), with a scale bar, north, room names and areas.
  • DXF: in MGA2020 metres, placed where the building is, with layers ROOMS, FIXTURES, WALLS, WINDOWS, DOORS and LABELS. Door swings are polylines.
  • SVG: one group per layer, with 1 unit to a metre.

The floor plans in the Check download each floor the same way, and the site report adds a typical floor of each building with units (the first six buildings).
